Her story takes a dark turn that you’ll never guess coming.

Once upon a time, there was an old couple who always wanted a child. One day in the garden, they found the biggest melon they had ever seen.

They took it home and cut it open, looking forward to a nice meal. Instead, they found a nice baby inside. They lost their appetite, but gained a daughter. They named her Urikohime 🍈, Melon Princess.

It was clear that she was no normal girl because in two years she grew up into a lovely young lady ripe for marriage. “It must be the fertilizer,” her father explained.

Her beauty reached the ears of a prince, and nibbled on it. He got real thirsty for melon and asked Urikohime’s parents for her hand in marriage, which they accepted.

The old couple went to town to prepare and told her to not let in any strangers.

While they were gone, a stranger knocked on the door, saying “Please let me in, I am a normal man.”

Urikohime refused, but the man said, “I’ve heard of your beauty, please open the door one tiny crack so that I may gaze upon your face.”

She had only entered the world 2 years ago, she didn’t know any better. She opened the door a crack. That was all it took.

The stranger barged in and turned out to be an amanojaku, a creature known for doing evil deeds.

It killed Urikohime and flayed her skin. Did you see that coming? The amanojackass then wore her skin to disguise itself as her.

When the day of the wedding came, Urikohime’s parents brought the Urikojaku to the prince, who fell in love immediately.

But then a sparrow came down and sang a song to reveal what happened, and the prince tore the Urikohime face off of the amanojaku. Turned out the sparrow was Urikohime’s spirit came to warn everyone. They all killed the amanojaku.
