Clan crests of the three “unifiers” of Japan, people who played a big role in uniting Japan, through war.

🔥 Oda Nobunaga (1534 - 1582). He was bold and ruthless. He lived during the Sengoku Period, a time of war. Nobunaga saw a thousand pathetic warlords killing each other just for land and glory and thought, “I wanna do that.”

He was a demon in battle and was one of the first warlords to use this new technology called guns. He won his way to becoming the most powerful warlord in Japan.

Nobunaga didn’t get to unify the country because he was betrayed and killed by one of his own generals.

🍚 Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537 - 1598). Hideyoshi was one of Nobunaga’s generals, and did not appreciate someone offing his lord. He demolished the traitor’s army, and the traitor died while fleeing.

This guy was impressive because he came from a peasant family. He rose the ranks thanks to his big brain and strong grip on diplomacy. He continued Nobunaga’s great life’s work of crushing men into blood and bones, and took control of most of the country.

When Hideyoshi fell sick, he made a council that would rule on behalf of his son, until his son came of age. One of the guys on the council was…

🏯 Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543 - 1616). Ieyasu was a bit more careful and strategic than the other two. After Hideyoshi died, Ieyasu defeated all of his major enemies, ended the wars, and became shogun.

Then he graciously helped Hideyoshi’s boy prepare for rule by plotting against the lad. There’s no better lesson than betrayal. After killing the son in the siege of Osaka Castle, Ieyasu got rid of all threats to his rule.

He formed the Tokugawa Shogunate, kicking off over 200 years of peace in Japan.
